Engineered retaining walls delivered by a civil contractor, not a wall installer
Keevs Construction builds commercial and infrastructure retaining walls across Newcastle, Maitland, Cessnock, Singleton, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, the Hunter Valley and the Central Coast. We deliver walls as part of broader civil packages for developers, commercial builders and civil contractor partners who need retaining structures coordinated with the earthworks, drainage and pavements around them.
Every retaining wall is priced, planned and built under our in-house engineering team. The engineer who reviews the structural drawings and develops the construction methodology is the same engineer who responds when something on site doesn’t match. Current clients include Richard Crookes Construction, Kingston Building and Livana Developments.

Why builders and developers partner with Keevs for retaining walls
Most civil contractors treat retaining walls as a parcel of work to hand to a wall installer. The structural drawings come from one business, the physical delivery from another, and the head contractor manages the gap between them. That works until the geotech doesn’t match the borehole report, or unmarked services turn up during excavation, or the wall alignment hits groundwater. Then it stops working.
Keevs runs a different model. We’re a civil contractor with engineers in the business. Retaining walls get priced, planned, staged and built under the same engineering oversight and project controls as the rest of the civil package. The wall ties into the earthworks. The drainage behind the wall ties into the stormwater works. The QA documentation goes into the same handover pack as the rest of the civil scope.
For developers and commercial builders working across Newcastle, Maitland, Cessnock and the Hunter Valley, that means one civil contractor responsible for the full scope. Fewer subcontractors to manage. One engineering team to call when something needs a decision. One handover pack that holds up at council and at audit.
Retaining wall types we deliver
Concrete sleeper walls
Steel post and precast concrete sleeper systems for grade transitions on subdivisions, commercial sites, carparks and road corridors. Pier drilling, post placement, subsoil drainage and backfill compaction delivered under engineering supervision and coordinated with the certifier.
Reinforced concrete walls
Cast in-situ reinforced concrete walls for commercial loads, basement perimeters, loading docks and structural embankments. Excavation, formwork, reinforcement, pour and staged backfill executed against the structural design and geotechnical advice.
Sandstone block walls
Sandstone block systems for commercial landscapes, schools, public open space and developments where the finish matters as much as the structure. Material sourcing, foundation preparation, block placement and drainage handled in-house.
Block and core-filled walls
Reinforced blockwork retaining systems for commercial and infrastructure applications. Built to the structural design with proper footings, reinforcement, drainage and waterproofing.
Gravity and gabion walls
Mass concrete, gabion and crib retaining systems for regional infrastructure and sites where a gravity solution is the right design call. Excavation, subgrade preparation, wall construction and drainage delivered as a single package.
Where we deliver retaining walls
Keevs builds retaining walls across commercial and infrastructure projects throughout the Hunter Region and Central Coast. The common thread is that the wall is part of a broader civil scope, and the client needs a contractor who understands how the retaining structure integrates with earthworks, drainage, pavements and the wider construction program.
Subdivisions and land development
Retaining walls on subdivisions manage level changes between lots, along road corridors and at stormwater interfaces. Keevs delivers these walls as part of the subdivision civil package, coordinated with bulk earthworks, drainage and road construction. No external wall subcontractor working in isolation inside a live subdivision program. For more on subdivision delivery, see our Subdivision and Land Development page.
Commercial developments
Carparks, retail centres, industrial facilities and mixed-use developments needing retaining structures to manage grade changes, define boundaries or support structural pads. Walls staged with the master civil works so excavation, drainage and pavements run sequentially around them, not waiting on someone else.
Schools and public facilities
Education campus expansions, sporting facilities and council infrastructure where retaining structures sit inside constrained sites and operating spaces. Coordinated under our standard safety and staging systems, with engineering supervision where works run adjacent to existing structures or live services.
Road and transport infrastructure
Retaining structures along public road corridors and bridge approaches built to the construction tolerances and compliance documentation the authority specification requires. Delivered under our ISO-certified systems with engineering hold points, compliance testing and verification at every stage.
Price your retaining wall package
Send us your drawings and specifications. Our team will review the scope, confirm the construction methodology and come back with a clear price and program. If retaining walls are part of a larger civil package, we will price the full scope so you can see where integrated delivery reduces cost and risk.
How in-house engineering changes retaining wall delivery
When a civil contractor subcontracts retaining walls, the structural engineer issues drawings and hold points, the wall installer interprets them on site, and the head contractor mediates between the two. That works until something unexpected comes up. Unexpected things come up on every retaining wall job.
Geotech that doesn’t match the borehole. Unmarked services found during excavation. Design levels that don’t reconcile with adjacent earthworks. Groundwater behind the wall alignment. Each of these needs a construction call backed by engineering judgement. When the engineering capability sits outside the construction team, that call takes days.
At Keevs, the engineer who reviewed the geotech, the project manager running the civil schedule, and the site team building the wall are in the same business. Site condition changes get assessed in real time. Temporary works get planned against the construction method, not retrofitted to it. Where design issues need a referral back to the structural engineer, the conversation happens immediately and on the same documents the site team is working from.
What’s in a Keevs retaining wall package
Pre-construction
Scope review against structural drawings and geotechnical reports. Identification of utility conflicts, access constraints and staging requirements. Construction methodology covering excavation, temporary works, water management and backfill execution against the engineering specification. Coordination with the structural certifier on hold points and inspection intervals.
Construction
Excavation to design footings with appropriate batters or shoring. Foundation preparation including subgrade proof-rolling, compaction testing and level survey. Wall construction to the structural specification, whether that involves steel posts and sleepers, formwork and reinforcement, or block placement. Drainage behind the wall using agricultural lines, geotextile and free-draining aggregate. Staged backfill with compaction testing documented at each lift.
Completion and handover
As-built survey verifying wall alignment and levels against design. Compaction test certificates and material certifications compiled for the certifying engineer. Photographic records of subgrade, reinforcement and drainage at each hold point. Handover pack issued directly to the builder or developer for inclusion in project records.
Who we work with
Property developers
Retaining walls delivered as an integrated part of civil packages for residential estates, commercial sites and industrial subdivisions. Walls quoted and staged alongside bulk earthworks, utilities and pavements under one contractor.
Commercial builders
Builders running commercial programs across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and Central Coast who need a retaining wall contractor that respects the master schedule, understands site access, and delivers the compliance documentation commercial construction requires.
Civil contractor partners
Civil contractors who win projects with retaining walls outside their internal capability. Engage Keevs to deliver the wall scope under your contract with our engineers, our crews and our QA. We work as a delivery partner, not a competitor.
Retaining walls as part of a full civil package
Retaining walls are rarely standalone. They sit within a broader civil scope that includes earthworks, drainage, pavements, kerb and gutter, and site preparation. Keevs delivers all of these services under the same project management, engineering team and quality systems. When we price a retaining wall, we also assess how the wall interfaces with surrounding civil works and where packaging those scopes together reduces cost, program risk and coordination effort.
If you’re pricing a project that includes retaining walls alongside other civil works, send us the full scope. Our team will review the package and identify where integrated delivery beats splitting scopes across multiple contractors. Frequently asked questions
What types of retaining walls does Keevs build?
Keevs builds concrete sleeper, reinforced concrete (cast in-situ), sandstone block, blockwork (reinforced and core-filled), and gravity systems including gabion and crib walls. All wall types are delivered to the structural engineer’s design with in-house engineering supervision through construction. Specialist walls such as soldier pile, anchored or shotcrete systems sit outside our standard delivery scope.
Does Keevs design retaining walls or certify them?
No. Structural design and certification sit with the project’s structural engineer. Keevs delivers the construction scope: methodology, excavation, footings, wall construction, drainage and backfill against the design. Our in-house engineers manage the construction-side engineering and coordinate with the certifying engineer at hold points and inspections.
Can Keevs deliver retaining walls as a standalone scope, or only inside a larger civil package?
Both. For builders and civil contractors needing only the retaining wall scope, Keevs can deliver as a standalone subcontract. For developers and builders engaging us on broader civil packages, the wall scope is priced and staged inside the full program alongside earthworks, drainage and pavements.
What documentation does Keevs provide at handover?
The handover pack includes as-built survey of wall alignment and levels, compaction test certificates at each backfill lift, material certifications, and photographic records of concealed elements (footings, reinforcement, drainage) at every engineering hold point. The pack is compiled for the certifying engineer and issued directly to the builder or developer for project records.
How is a retaining wall package priced?
Keevs prices retaining walls from the construction sequence, not from raw quantities. Engineers review the structural drawings, geotechnical report and surrounding civil scope, identify methodology and access risk, then build the price from how the wall will actually be delivered on site. The result is a fixed scope with clear assumptions and fewer variations through delivery.
What regions does Keevs deliver retaining walls in?
From the Newcastle office, Keevs delivers retaining walls across Newcastle, Maitland, Cessnock, Singleton, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, the Hunter Valley and the Central Coast. A second office in Port Macquarie covers commercial retaining walls across the Mid North Coast and Coffs Coast.
