Project Overview
Keevs Construction delivered the full civil works package for a new preschool facility at a public school in Kurri Kurri, NSW. The project involved bulk earthworks, a complete stormwater drainage network, and two engineered retaining walls on an active school site.
Working within a live school environment required strict sequencing and careful management of every interface. Students, staff and visitors remained on site throughout construction, so access control, dust suppression and noise management were built into the programme from day one.
Scope included demolition and relocation of existing infrastructure, ACM and GSW contaminated material management under EPA requirements, and civil survey with machine control from mobilisation through to detail pickup.
Scope of Works
Site Establishment
ERSED controls including sediment fencing, cattle grid and stabilised site access were installed at mobilisation. Civil survey, machine control setup and full detail pickup ran from first day through to completion.
Demolition & Earthworks
Existing fencing, play equipment and stairs were removed and relocated per the demolition plan. Tree removal and protection followed, then deveg and topsoil stripping in accordance with the geotech report. Bulk cut to fill was completed with imported DGS20 under Level 1 engineering supervision.
Stormwater Drainage
A complete stormwater system was installed including supply and placement of stormwater pits and 225mm SN8 PVC lines with full excavation, backfill and connection between pits.
Retaining Walls
Two masonry block retaining walls were constructed, each with reinforced concrete footings, core fill, drainage aggregate backfill and capping. Detail excavation of ramps, stairs and pedestrian pavement completed the finished levels.

Live-Site Construction
This project required Keevs to operate on an active school campus with students, staff and visitors present throughout the construction programme. Every aspect of the works was planned around the school’s daily operations, with clear separation between construction zones and occupied areas.
Contaminated material was identified during site investigations. Keevs managed the ACM and GSW classified material under EPA requirements with licensed supervision, air monitoring, full documentation and certified sealed cartage. An allowance of 570 tonnes of VENM topsoil was also loaded, carted and disposed off site.
