Engineered retaining walls delivered by a civil contractor, not a wall installer
Keevs Construction delivers commercial and infrastructure retaining walls across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and the Central Coast. We build walls as part of broader civil packages for developers, commercial builders and civil contractor partners who need reliable retaining structures coordinated with earthworks, drainage and site preparation.
Every retaining wall project is led by our senior in-house engineering team. That means the people coordinating your excavation, checking your geotechnical conditions, designing temporary works and managing backfill compaction all sit within the same business. There is no gap between the engineering intent and the construction delivery.
ISO Certified
Quality, safety and environmental management systems certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
In-House Engineers
Senior engineers embedded in every retaining wall project from scope review through to completion and handover.

Why builders and civil contractors partner with Keevs for retaining walls
Most civil contractors and commercial builders treat retaining walls as a specialist subcontract. The engineering requirements, geotechnical considerations and certification obligations push it outside their core delivery model. That creates a coordination gap. The retaining wall subcontractor works in isolation, often with limited visibility of the broader civil program, drainage staging or earthworks sequencing around the wall.
Keevs Construction operates differently. We are a civil contractor that builds retaining walls in-house, under the same project management, engineering oversight and quality systems that govern the rest of the civil package. That means the retaining wall is not a separate scope bolted onto the program. It is integrated into the earthworks plan, coordinated with drainage installation and staged to support, not disrupt, your construction sequence.
For civil contractors, this removes a subcontract interface entirely. For builders and developers, it means fewer parties on site, one point of accountability and a retaining wall package that is delivered to the same standard as the earthworks, pavements and drainage around it.
Retaining wall types we deliver
Concrete sleeper walls
Steel post and precast concrete sleeper systems for level changes on subdivisions, commercial boundaries, car parks and road corridors. Keevs manages excavation, post installation, sleeper placement, drainage behind the wall and backfill compaction. We work to the manufacturer’s engineering specifications and coordinate with the certifying engineer where required.
Reinforced concrete walls
Cast in-situ reinforced concrete retaining walls for applications requiring higher structural capacity. This includes basement perimeter walls, heavy vehicle loading areas, bridge abutments and infrastructure embankments. Our team manages excavation, formwork, reinforcement placement, concrete pours and staged backfill in accordance with structural drawings and geotechnical recommendations.
Sandstone block walls
Natural sandstone block retaining walls suited to commercial landscapes, school grounds, public spaces and developments where visual finish matters alongside structural performance. Keevs handles material procurement, foundation preparation, block placement and drainage integration.
Soldier pile and shotcrete walls
Soldier pile, anchored and shotcrete wall systems for deeper excavations, basement construction and sites with limited setback from boundaries or existing structures. These walls are built under close engineering supervision with real-time monitoring of movements and loads during construction.
Gravity and crib walls
Mass concrete, gabion and timber crib retaining systems for rural developments, road infrastructure and sites where engineered mass solutions are the most practical approach. Keevs delivers excavation, foundation preparation, wall construction and drainage installation as a coordinated package.
Where we deliver retaining walls
Keevs Construction builds retaining walls across a range of commercial and infrastructure projects. The common thread is that the wall is part of a broader civil scope, and the client needs a contractor who understands how the retaining structure integrates with earthworks, drainage, pavements and the wider construction program.
Subdivisions and land development
Retaining walls on subdivisions manage level changes between lots, along road corridors and at stormwater interfaces. Keevs delivers these walls as part of the subdivision civil package, coordinated with bulk earthworks, drainage installation and road construction. This avoids the delays that come from managing a separate retaining wall subcontractor within a staged subdivision program. For more on how we approach subdivision delivery, see our Subdivision and Land Development page.
Commercial developments
Car parks, retail centres, industrial facilities and mixed-use developments regularly require retaining walls to manage grade changes, define boundaries and support structural platforms. Keevs builds these walls within the civil works program so excavation, drainage and pavement works are staged around the wall construction rather than waiting for a separate contractor to complete their scope.
Schools and public facilities
School expansions, sporting facilities and council infrastructure often involve retaining walls on constrained sites with live environments. Keevs Construction manages these projects with structured safety plans, clear staging to minimise disruption and direct engineering oversight of wall construction adjacent to existing buildings, services and occupied areas.
Road and transport infrastructure
Retaining walls along road corridors, rail interfaces and bridge approaches require precise construction tolerances and coordination with authority requirements. Keevs delivers these structures under the same ISO certified quality systems we apply across all civil infrastructure projects, with engineering hold points, compaction testing and certified documentation at each stage.

How in-house engineering changes retaining wall delivery
When a civil contractor outsources retaining walls, the engineering review and construction delivery are handled by different parties. The structural engineer issues a design and certification requirements. The wall subcontractor interprets those requirements on site. The head contractor coordinates between them. That works until something changes on site, and changes on site are common with retaining walls.
Geotechnical conditions differ from the borehole data. Existing services are found in the excavation zone. The design levels do not align with the adjacent earthworks. Water is encountered behind the wall line. Each of these situations requires an engineering response, and when that engineering sits outside the construction team, the response takes days rather than hours.
At Keevs, the engineer reviewing geotechnical reports, the project manager sequencing the civil works and the site crew building the wall all work within the same business. When site conditions change, the engineering response is immediate. Temporary works are assessed in real time. Methodology adjustments are made with full visibility of the structural intent. That coordination is what separates an integrated civil contractor from a wall installer with an engineering subconsultant.
What is included in a Keevs retaining wall package
Our retaining wall packages cover the full civil scope required to deliver a compliant, certified wall. This is not limited to placing blocks or pouring concrete. It includes the site preparation, temporary works, drainage integration and documentation that builders and developers need to satisfy engineering certification and council requirements.
Pre-construction
Scope review against structural drawings and geotechnical reports. Identification of services, access constraints and staging requirements. Methodology development including excavation sequence, temporary support, dewatering and backfill specification. Coordination with the certifying engineer to confirm construction hold points and inspection requirements.
Construction
Excavation to design levels with benching or battered excavation faces where required. Foundation preparation including proof rolling, compaction testing and level surveys. Wall construction in accordance with structural drawings, whether that involves steel posts and sleepers, reinforcement and formwork, or block placement. Drainage installation behind the wall including ag pipe, geotextile filter fabric and free-draining gravel. Staged backfill with compaction testing at specified lift heights. Protection of adjacent services, structures and site access throughout construction.
Completion and handover
As-built survey confirming wall alignment and levels against the design. Compaction test results and material certifications compiled for the certifying engineer. Photo documentation of concealed elements (foundations, reinforcement, drainage) captured at each hold point. Handover documentation package issued to the builder or developer for inclusion in the project record.
Who we work with
Developers
We deliver retaining walls as part of civil packages for residential subdivisions, commercial developments and mixed-use sites. Retaining walls are priced and staged alongside earthworks, drainage and pavements so the full civil scope is coordinated under one contractor.
Commercial builders
Builders who need a retaining wall subcontractor that understands program coordination, site access constraints and the documentation requirements of commercial construction. Keevs delivers the wall and can extend into adjacent civil works when it makes sense for your program.
Civil contractor partners
Civil contractors who win projects that include retaining walls outside their core capability. Rather than managing a wall subcontractor, you can engage Keevs to deliver the retaining wall scope under your project with our engineering oversight, quality systems and experienced crews. We work as a reliable delivery partner, not a competitor.
Retaining walls as part of a full civil package
Retaining walls are rarely standalone projects. They sit within a broader civil scope that includes earthworks, drainage, pavements, kerb and gutter, and site preparation. Keevs Construction delivers all of these services under the same project management, engineering team and quality systems. When we price a retaining wall, we also assess how the wall interfaces with surrounding civil works and where packaging those scopes together reduces cost, program risk and coordination effort.
If you are pricing a project that includes retaining walls alongside other civil works, send us the full scope. Our engineering team will review the package and identify where an integrated approach delivers better value than splitting scopes across multiple contractors.
